Application Notes | The antibody binds specifically to FRβ, a member of the folate receptor family. The receptor binds with high affinity to folic acid and folic acid derivatives, and transports 5- methyltetrahydrofolate into the cell. The receptor is expressed on the surface of tumour associated macrophages (TAMs) that promote growth and metastasis of tumours such as gliomas and colon, breast and lung carcinomas. Research has shown FRβ is only expressed on activated macrophages, and thereby a monoclonal antibody that targets the receptor can be useful in the diagnosis of the cancer. Furthermore, the antibody may be conjugated with a toxin, delivering the drug only to TAMs and not to healthy macrophages. |
